Kōwhai kicks it all off

This is the first picture I ever did. I can’t quite recall how it came about, but it would have started with my annual ‘WOW!’, noticing the neighbourhood kōwhai trees starting to come into flower. The colour, shape, silky smoothness, and just the huge abundance of newly emerging flowers is always stunning. So sculptural – probably what sparked the idea to pick some and turn them into a picture. I turned it into a screensaver on my phone, and every time I looked at it my little heart filled with joy. 🙂

Species in this picture: yellow kōwhai flowers (Sophora tetraptera), red karo flowers (Pittosporum crassifolium), and white wharangi flowers (Melicope ternata).
