Native New Zealand trees are mostly evergreen, so we don’t get vast tracts of forest changing colour in autumn like you do in the northern hemisphere. We do however have tons of introduced, non-native deciduous trees in our towns and cities, and they do change colour before dropping their leaves in autumn.

My home city of Wellington is kind of special in that it has mostly evergreen vegetation, including lots of native species such as pōhutukawa (which doesn’t actually occur naturally there, but that’s a story for another picture). Nelson is more typical of small town/city New Zealand, and autumn is a riot of exotic colour. I made this picture while I was there visiting my dying father. This one’s for you, dear Dad.
